Understanding Minimum and Maximum Viewing Distance for LED Video Walls

When choosing an LED video wall, the pixel pitch plays a crucial role in determining the optimal viewing distance. This blog explains how to calculate the minimum and maximum viewing distances for different pixel pitches such as P1.25, P1.5, P1.8, P2, P2.5, P3, P4, P5, and P6 using simple formulas.

The pixel pitch of an LED video wall is the distance between the centers of two adjacent LEDs, measured in millimeters (mm). This value, denoted as "P", directly affects the clarity of the image and how far or close a viewer can be from the display for optimal viewing.

When choosing the right pixel pitch, it's important to calculate the minimum and maximum viewing distances based on the space and viewer's position.

Formulas to Calculate Viewing Distances:

1. Maximum Viewing Distance (meters):
Maximum Viewing Distance=Pixel Pitch×10000/1000
This means the farthest recommended distance from the screen should be 10,000 times the pixel pitch.

2. Minimum Viewing Distance (meters):
Minimum Viewing Distance=Pixel Pitch×1000/1000
This means the closest viewing distance should be 1,000 times the pixel pitch to avoid pixelation.

Viewing Distance Calculations for Different Pixel Pitches:

  • P1.25 (1.25 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 1.25 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 12.5 meters

  • P1.5 (1.5 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 1.5 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 15 meters

  • P1.8 (1.8 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 1.8 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 18 meters

  • P2 (2 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 2 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 20 meters

  • P2.5 (2.5 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 2.5 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 25 meters

  • P3 (3 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 3 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 30 meters

  • P4 (4 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 4 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 40 meters

  • P5 (5 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 5 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 50 meters

  • P6 (6 mm):

    • Minimum Viewing Distance: 6 meters

    • Maximum Viewing Distance: 60 meters

Conclusion:

To provide the best viewing experience with your LED video wall, select a pixel pitch based on how close or far your audience will be. Smaller pixel pitches like P1.25 or P1.5 are perfect for close-range viewing, while larger pixel pitches like P5 or P6 are ideal for large venues with distant viewers.
